road cycling: Montreal GP: Sagan solo

September 16, 2013 by the editorial office

With the GP Montreal, the WorldTour guest performance of the international cycling elite in Canada came to an end. While Peter Sagan (Cannondale) went away empty-handed in Quebec, this time he put everything on one card and won solo.

In all, the field had to complete seventeen laps of a nearly 12-kilometer course, of which Mont Royal was the executioner. During the race, the Russian formation Katusha was particularly active. Rüdiger Selig and Peter Ignatenko tried their luck, but couldn't prove themselves to the final.

As the race entered the penultimate lap, Swiss Michael Albasini (Orica-GreenEdge) attacked at Mont Royal and split the field. As a result, it was clear that a leading group of almost eleven riders would fight for victory among themselves. And the group was good. Ryder Hesjedal (Gramin-Sharp) wanted to put in a good performance in front of his home crowd. Lars Petter Nordhaug (Belkin) wanted to repeat last year's win. Filippo Pozzato (Lampre-Merida) did everything in his power to convert his current good form into success. But none of the drivers could match the cleverness and strength of Peter Sagan. The Slovak attacked a few kilometers from the finish and blew up the lead. He was then able to defend his lead and finally had time to celebrate his victory in detail.

//Result
1. Peter Sagan (Cannondale) 5:20:07
2. Simone Ponzi (Astana) 0:00:04
3. Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Sharp) 0:00:04
4. Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) 0:00:07
5. Filippo Pozzato (Lampre Merida) 0:00:07
