road cycling: Vuelta a España #10: Horner strikes back

September 2, 2013 by Veit Hammer

vuelta1

The American Chris Horner is experiencing a second spring at this year's Vuelta. After he had already won a stage at the beginning of the tour, he now won again. The side effect of both victories is taking the lead in the overall standings. On the 11th stage, Horner will therefore again start in the red jersey.

The 10th stage of the Vuelta took the riders over 186,8 kilometers from Torredelcampo up the Alto Hazallanas. The brutal climb in the heart of Andalusia claimed some victims and reshuffled the overall standings. With just under 4,5 kilometers to go, Horner broke away from the group of favorites and quickly built up a sizeable lead. Even when Giro winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) decided to give chase, Horner was able to maintain his lead. At the finish, the gap was 48 seconds.

Another 20 seconds later, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) led the Italian Ivan Basso (Cannondale) and his compatriot Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) across the finish line. His teammate Daniel Moreno, who took over the red jersey yesterday, lost more than two minutes to Horner on the final climb, which is up to 18 percent steep.
