road cycling: Vuelta a España #19: Purito ignites at Alto Naranco

September 13, 2013 by Veit Hammer

vuelta1

The American Chris Horner (RadioShack-Leopard) can slip on the leader's jersey for the third time at this Vuelta. At 41, the oldest participant took six seconds off Italy's Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and thus took the lead in the overall standings. Tomorrow is the most notorious climb of this Tour of Spain with the Angliru. There, Nibali has to pull out all the stops again if he wants to snatch Horner's jersey again.

The 181-kilometer stage up to the Alto Naranco was dominated by a breakaway group for a long time. However, it quickly became clear that Team Katusha was planning something in the final. As a group, they started the hunt, which Joaquim Rodriguez, thanks to a brilliant attack in the last kilometer, finally ended successfully with the day's victory and Daniel Moreno in third place.

Pleasing from the point of view of the German team NetApp-Endura: Leopold König finished eighth on the day and thus maintained his top 10 position in the overall ranking.
