cycling: Ironman Cozumel: Weiss and Joyce brave the heat

2 December 2013 by Veit Hammer

cozumel

Even in December, some long-distance specialists never get tired. At the Ironman Cozumel, some top athletes such as Eneko Llanos, Tyler Butterfield and the German Nils Frommhold gathered at the start. For the latter in particular, it initially looked like the Caribbean heat would help him. He was one of the first to leave the water. On the bike, however, he lost valuable time to the other competitors. Both Llanos and Butterfield once again proved their talent on the bike. However, the best race was delivered by the Austrian Michael Weiss. In the transition zone for the final marathon, his lead over his closest pursuers was almost ten minutes. In the first race after his two-year doping ban, Weiss was able to defend almost seven minutes. Butterfield landed in second place, who in turn distanced Llanos by almost three minutes. In the end, Frommhold took fifth place as the best German.

Rachel Joyce, second in Hawaii, won the women's race. The Briton won ahead of the two Americans Amanda Stevens and Jessie Donovan. Best German was Astrid Ganzow in twelfth place.
