Michele Acquarone, the former race director of the Giro d'Italia, has been fired by the RCS organizers, according to the Italian news agency La Presse. The former CEO Giacomo Catano also has to leave the company with him. Reasons were not given.
Two months ago, Acquarone was suspended by RCS and forced to relinquish his position as race director of the Giro d'Italia. RCS justified this at the time with "irregularities" concerning a sum of 13 million euros that was missing from the accounts. Acquarone was accused of having embezzled part of the money. The Italian denied this: "Those who know me are aware of my professionalism and my credo: fairness, respect, and dialogue." He plans to address the situation at a press conference on Thursday. He had only taken over the Giro directorship in 2011 from his equally controversial predecessor, Angelo Zomegnan.
