cycling: GP Sven Nys: The world champion wins his own race

1 January 2014 by Veit Hammer

Sven Nys (Crelan-AA Drink) has won the Superprestige race in Baal for the 12th time. Right from the start, Nys dominated the GP Sven Nys named after him and started 2014 the way he ended 2013: with a win.

The Czech Martin Bina (Kwadro-Stannah) was in the lead for the first half lap. However, he was caught before the first running passage by the reigning world champion and Philipp Walsleben (BKCP Powerplus). The German champion made a strong impression in the early laps, despite not being able to match the Belgian's pace. Behind Nys, together with Rob Peeters (Vastgoedservice), he pushed ahead with the group of other competitors. Among these, Zdenek Stybar (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) and Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) turned out to be the strongest in the long half of the race. Both followed Nys to the podium after the race. But they had nothing to oppose his outstanding drive.

In the end, the best German was Walsleben, who finished seventh, just over two minutes behind Nys. The second German, Marcel Meisen (Kwadro-Stannah), came in tenth.

Compton

In the women's category, Katie Compton (Trek), the World Cup leader, made things clear. However, she benefited from a late defection by world champion Marianne Vos (Rabobank), who had to settle for second place ahead of Nikki Harris (Young Telenet-Fidea).
