cycling: Tour of San Luis #2: Arredondo secures first mountain finish

22 January 2014 by the editorial office

Colombian Julian Arredondo, new to Team Trek Factory Racing, secured victory on stage two of the strong Tour of San Luis with a perfectly timed sprint. In the final he relegated his companion Peter Stetina (BMC) to second place. Tour runner-up Nairo Quintana (Movistar) followed in third place.

While stars like Tom Boonen, Mark Cavendish (both Omega Pharma-QuickStep) and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) are curling up for their season, the local riders mostly shape the stage picture. So it was athletes from South American teams who dominated the race on the second stage. Jorge Giacinti, Cristian Martinez (both San Luis Somos Todos), Sebastian Trillini (Argentina), Jonathan Guzman (Chile) and Sebastian Tolosa (Buenos Aires Provincia) led until the final climb.

Almost five kilometers before the finish on Mirador del Potrero finally attacked Stetina, followed by his teammate Darwin Atapuma, Quintana and Arredondo. Only the later winner of the day could follow a further increase in speed by the American. The decision was only made when the group threatened to get together again on the last kilometer due to the strong headwind. Stetina tried to surprise Arredondo with a long sprint, but was unsuccessful.

The American Phil Gaimon (Garmin-Sharp) continues to lead the overall standings, who again drove a strong race and was able to defend his advantage from the previous day.
