cycling: Tour of San Luis #5: Movistar is doubly happy

25 January 2014 by the editorial office

The Spanish WorldTour team Movistar had two reasons to celebrate on the fifth stage of the Tour of San Luis. In addition to the day's victory by the Italian Adriano Malori, the team also took the overall lead thanks to the Colombian Nairo Quintana.

Malori dominated the 20-kilometer individual time trial in San Luis and thus also duped the American Taylor Phinney (BMC), who had started the race as the favourite. In the end, he was three seconds behind Malori, who had a time of 22:11 minutes. The former American time trial champion said he made a tactical mistake. He hadn't asked the team mechanics if they could fit a 55T or 56T chainring up front. “I drove in the morning and thought that was not necessary. But I was going 75 or 78 km/h in a downwind passage. I even had to stop pedaling a couple of times”, he explained. Jorge Giacinti (San Luis Somos Todos) was third (+29 seconds). The best German was Danilo Hondo (Trek Factory Racing) in eighth place on the day.
