cycling: Brian Cookson: Integrating Track Cycling into the Winter Olympics

March 26, 2014 by the editorial office

revolutionseries1

There's no question that track cycling has lost a lot of public attention since the season was moved to winter. This is especially true in the traditional cycling regions. The World Cup stations of the past season are also an example of this. Two out of three stops were in South America. The only stop in Europe was in Manchester.

Nevertheless, the UCI would like to stick to the development. Brian Cookson has been President of the UCI for six months now and has since caused a stir with many ideas - mostly positive ones. Today, however, he made a proposal that is likely to cause divided opinion. The Brit, who a few weeks ago was already thinking about the possible inclusion of cyclocross in the Olympics [Link], also considers the transfer of the track disciplines from the Summer Games to the Winter Games calendar to be a positive step. According to Cookson, the summer games could be relieved in the same way as the winter games would be upgraded.

However, the Briton should be pretty much alone with this opinion at the moment. Both the track cyclists themselves and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are likely to view this proposal rather critically. .
