Testing: Falk Outdoor Pantera 32+: breaking new ground

April 27, 2014 by the editorial team

Navigation specialist Falk Outdoor launched two new bicycle navigation devices a few months ago: the Pantera 32 and the Pantera 32+.

Both devices are essentially identical: they are waterproof, have a 2,8-inch color touchscreen display, 128 MB RAM, 8 GB flash memory, micro-USB 2.0 storage, a barometer, a 3D compass, and a G-sensor. The difference lies in the additional features. The Pantera 32+ comes with a chest strap for heart rate monitoring and a cadence sensor in addition to the speed sensor. The sensors connect to the bike computer via the ANT+ wireless standard, which also allows pairing with other heart rate monitors and cadence sensors from companies like Bryton, Garmin, Mio, etc., provided they use the same wireless standard.

Practice

In recent weeks we have been able to use the Pantera 32+ both during training stays under the Spanish sun and during pre-season training in our home region.

The initial impression was positive. The device's dimensions are quite convenient for a navigation device. With external dimensions of 10,8 by 6,2 centimeters and a height of 1,7 centimeters, it's definitely not bulky , and the weight of 134 grams is also acceptable.

The supplied wheel sensors for speed and cadence can be attached to the frame relatively quickly using cable ties. The same applies to the handlebar adapter.

Falk has implemented the user interface very well: The Pantera 32+ can be operated like a car navigation system, and all functions are practically self-explanatory. The excellent quick start and installation instructions also contribute to this, explaining the most important points in just a few pages and, above all, with very good visuals. Thanks to the suggested swipe gestures, even less experienced smartphone users will immediately understand how a touchscreen works and what information appears when scrolling through the screen.

The streaks left by sweaty fingers on the display and the low level of illumination are unattractive on the touchscreen. Despite full illumination, the display is difficult to see in direct sunlight. The mirror effect is too high in such situations.

According to Falk, the battery has an operating time of eight hours and can easily withstand trips of five to seven hours, as long as you don't forget to charge the device the evening before.

What's truly special about the Pantera 32+ is its ability to convert previously loaded GPS tracks into navigable routes. Falk calls this feature iGPX . A constant internet connection isn't required, and the route can be conveniently planned without any additional tools. The usefulness of this innovation becomes apparent the first time you take it for a spin. Changes in direction are signaled by beeps, eliminating the need to constantly look at the display.

The Pantera 32+' s strength lies primarily in its navigation. Route selection, in particular, proved impressive in testing. From standard address entry to the selection of points of interest (POIs), a wide range of destination options are available. Furthermore, the Pantera 32+ offers a selection of over 3.700 pre-programmed mountain passes. This makes it entirely possible to complete training routes in hilly terrain and on roads with little traffic.

The evaluation of the training data takes place with just a push of a button, whereby the data can be called up immediately.

Conclusion

For ambitious athletes, the Falk Outdoor Pantera 32+ is a very helpful companion. It supports training planning and analysis. However, the included software only works on Microsoft PCs.
