cycling: ITU World Cup Auckland: Gomez and Stimpson set a scent mark

In the end, the Spanish World Cup title holder was in the lead. Javier Gómez prevailed at the ITU World Cup in Auckland, New Zealand, ahead of the highly favored Briton Jonathan Brownlee and Australia's Aaron Royle. However, this time Gómez did not wait until the home straight to put the younger of the Brownlee brothers in his place, as he did at the World Cup final last year, but attacked as early as kilometer eight of the course. Previously, both had delivered a largely identical race.

However, the race was somewhat disappointing for Mario Mola. The Spaniard was also one of the favorites before the start, but started the run with a relatively large deficit. Especially in swimming and on the bike, like the German starters, he was not able to keep up with the pace of the later winners. The best German was Gregor Buchholz in tenth place.

In the women's race, Anne Haug was the favourite. In the past two years she had won the ITU World Cup in Auckland. This time, however, she had to settle for second place after an exciting race. First place went to the Brit Jodie Stimpson, who had already built up a cushion for the final discipline on the bike course and was thus able to keep Haug at a distance.
