Testing: Polar RCX3 Bike: training control with the left hand

April 5, 2014 by the editorial team

The Finnish company Polar is a pioneer in performance-based training. However, things have been somewhat quieter around their products in recent years. This is set to change with the RCX3.

equipment and practice

The Polar RCX3 training computer is a well-designed and typical Polar tool for monitoring training. The model is available in two colors: black, as in this test, or white, a women's-only model with a slightly narrower wristband.

The multisport watch is available in three different versions, with Polar tailoring the options to individual customer needs. The RCX3 Bike set includes a heart rate strap, a bike mount, a speed sensor, and a DataLink for transferring data to a computer. There is also a Run version and a version that includes a G5 GPS receiver.

The RCX3 bike set is easy to get going. The clock can be easily attached to the handlebars using the bracket included in the set. This allows you to use the RCX3 like a normal computer.

The display is easy to read thanks to the large numbers, and the layout is clear and easy to understand. However, the buttons are quite small, so you have to press them firmly to access the desired menu. Another minor drawback: the RXC3 is easily interfered with by other Polar devices. At the start of a workout, you need to make sure no other Polar user is nearby, otherwise you risk not seeing your own heart rate on the watch. During training, however, the RXC3 is not affected and works perfectly.

Triathletes will likely find it exciting that switching between two sports is easy. All you have to do is select between cycling , running , or another sport in the start menu.

Another positive feature is the ability to record the results of a total of 99 training sessions and 99 split times. Additionally, you can view your current or average heart rate, as well as your calorie consumption. At the end of the workout, the RCX3 summarizes the session in clear sentences.

Conclusion

The RCX3 bike is state-of-the-art and completely avoids any aspects that might distract from the essential training parameters. The display is large and easy to read, and the operation is intuitive. A welcome bonus is the automatic training analysis. During testing, we were particularly impressed by the device's versatility, although it's advisable to check your data on the display before using it.
