After the opening win, Javier Gomez doesn't let anything burn in the second race of the World Triathlon Series either. After having to let Richard Varga from Slovakia take the lead in the water, he quickly closed the gap on the bike together with Jonathan Brownlee (Great Britain). From then on, the duo literally tore the field apart. Only twelve other athletes, including the German Justus Nieschlag, were able to follow the two.
With a lead of almost one and a half minutes over the next group around Mario Mola (Spain) and Steffen Justus, the leading group put on their running shoes. Gomez and Brownlee quickly broke away from their fellow contestants, as was previously expected of them. The question was therefore rather whether the Briton would be able to stand up to the reigning world champion at the short distance. And he could. However, only up to half of the running distance. Because after Brownlee had tried to put the Spaniard under pressure, he countered him in a classic way. In the end, this gave him his second win of the season in the World Triathlon Series. Brownlee finished second ahead of Russia's Dmitry Polyanskiy. Gregor Buchholz was the best German in 13th place. Nieschlag was 23rd.
Like Gomez with the men, Britain's Jodie Stimpson dominated the second stop of the World Triathlon Series at will. After the swim had been shortened due to the water temperatures, twelve women were in the lead. Among them was Stimpson, who had already taken time from her competitors Anne Haug and Gwen Jorgensen when she switched to the bike. Neither of them should be able to close the gap. This was also due to the fact that Stimpson could rely on the work of her national team colleagues at the top.
It's understandable that Stimpson put pressure on the running course right from the start and was able to celebrate victory in the end. Briton Helen Jenkins came second ahead of Jorgensen, who conjured up by far the best time on the South African tarmac. Haug also ran well and was able to move up to sixth place in the end.
