Product news: Does the UCI allow the use of disc brakes from 2016?

21 May 2014 by the editorial office

disc brakes

Cycling: According to a report by the online portal Bike-eu.com the UCI will allow the use of disc brakes in licensed road racing from 2016. The pros should then also be able to enjoy the new brakes.

An advertisement by the Japanese component manufacturer Shimano, in which some well-known professionals look enviously at the in-house hydraulic road bike disc brake, would then be obsolete.

Jeroen Snijders Blok (COO Accell Group), member of the Board of Directors of the World Federation Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI), confirmed to the portal that there were positive signals from the UCI for this development. However, he also noted that the World Cycling Federation has yet to assess the risks of using disc brakes. As an example, Snijders Blok cites a fall at a speed of around 80 kilometers per hour.

Due to the exams, it is therefore unlikely that there will be a rule change from the coming season. The 2016 season therefore seems more likely. “That means it will take until 2016”, according to Snijders Blok. "At least that's what I expect." The WFSGI expects increasing sales figures from the rule changes.
