Cycling: After summer has arrived in Germany, summery feelings also arise at the Giro d'Italia. Arm and leg warmers can stay in the suitcase for the time being and Italy shows its classic side. The route of the tenth stage led perfectly flat through the Po Valley - the cradle of Italian cycling. But not only: it started in Modena, the city of Ferraris and balsamic vinegar; Via Parma with its specialties, the riders reached the finish line in the picturesque Salsomaggiore Terme, where of course a mass sprint was on the agenda. Even the tiny hill five kilometers from the finish could not prevent this.
In terms of the sprint and the red jersey, everything seems to be heading towards a France vs. Italy battle. France is only successfully represented by Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ.fr), Italy by several drivers. Luckily Bouhanni had a first-class sprint helper today: Sebastien Chavanel, who drove him to the sprint alone for more than a kilometer after Bouhanni already seemed to be knocked off. Above all, he kept him out of the bad mass fall 700 meters from the finish.
Bouhanni ended up winning pretty cool ahead of Italy's Giacomo Nizzoli (Trek) and Australia's Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge).
Cadel Evans stayed at the front of the field in the final and avoided all of the day's crashes. He was thus able to defend the Maglia Rosa with ease.
