cycling: Tour of California #5: Phinney keeps the peloton at bay

16 May 2014 by the editorial office

knock3

Cycling: Taylor Phinney (BMC) won stage four of the Tour of California, holding the field in check with a late attack. In Santa Barbara he was twelve seconds ahead of Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and Matt Goss (Orica-GreenEdge).

The American broke away on the descent of San Marcos Pass, the final climb of the day. On this, the field had previously provided the last of the original six breakaways of the day. Jens Voigt (Trek) had previously tried to catch up with them. Unlike last year, when he succeeded and was able to win a stage, the field provided him. Only Phinney managed to drive a successful attack. He took advantage of a disagreement between the Orica-GreenEdge and Cannondale teams.
