Lifestyle: The Velothon-Series gets one more race. After Berlin and Philadelphia there will also be a race in Vienna. The world cycling association UCI has today Velothon Vienna as the closing event of the newly launched UCI Velothon Majors-Event series announced.
The UCI Velothon Majors form a cycling concept as an umbrella brand, in which international cycling festivals are set up in eight cities worldwide. The concept aims to promote the development of mass sport events through the high level of media coverage of accompanying UCI elite races. Going beyond the event weekend, the Velothon-Events are starting points for the development of year-round cycling projects that support urban cycling culture and children's and youth sports in the respective city and its surroundings.
Conceptual models are the Garmin Velothon Berlin - a race in UCI category 1.1 - in which 13.000 participants start in front of the Brandenburg Gate and Europe's largest cycling festival, the Hamburger Vattenfall Cyclassics with 23.000 participants and associated UCI WorldTour race.
After the Velothon Philadelphia on June 1st Velothon Vienna on September 21st will mark the end of this year's cycling season. Accordingly, the concept developed together with the Austrian Cycling Association became the first Velothon Vienna aimed at a sporting togetherness and not at a competition. goal of the first Velothon Vienna is, in addition to cycling enthusiasts, to get athletes from other disciplines interested in cycling in order to initially achieve a high level of acceptance for the development of the project. Close cooperation with the Sports Day underscores this claim.
The day after Austria's biggest sports show starts Velothon Vienna in front of the Burgtheater. The route leads along the Ringstrasse from the heart of Vienna past almost all the tourist highlights of the historic old town, then runs along the Wienzeile along Schönbrunn Palace into the world-famous Vienna Woods. The 4.4 kilometer long final ascent leads to the Kahlenberg so that the sporting demands are not neglected despite all the beauty.
