Triathlon: The penultimate race of the 2014 ITU World Triathlon Series in Stockholm was a decided affair for brothers Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee. Gregor Buchholz caused a surprise in third place.
In cool temperatures, the race started in a way that the Brownlee brothers probably didn't expect. With Javier Gomez, the leader of the overall standings, lost contact while swimming and thus enabled the British brothers to make a tactical change. The Brownlee brothers showed their strength on the mountainous bike course and consolidated their position in front of their pursuers, including Buchholz. He was still a little behind after the swim, but fought his way forward on the bike.
The Brownlee brothers made the second substitution with a lead of almost a minute, with Jonathan in particular trying to keep up the pace. The younger of the two finally broke away from his brother in the last kilometer. Alistair Brownlee finished second behind Jonathan Brownlee. Third place went to Buchholz in a gripping sprint, beating the strong Spaniard Mario Mola. Gomez had already finished the race at this point, but it was still enough for first place in the overall standings.
In the women's race, USA's Sarah Groff won in the absence of overall leader Gwen Jorgenson. Andrea Hewitt and Nicky Samuels from New Zealand took second and third place. Anja Knapp was the best German in sixth place.
