Clothing: Bell Super: The enduro all-round protection

August 21, 2014 by the editorial team

Test: Even though full-face helmets are mandatory protective gear in 99 percent of all enduro races, half-shell helmets remain the preferred choice for after-work rides. However, these too must meet increasingly demanding requirements. One such helmet is the Bell Super , a helmet specifically designed for enduro racing. We took a closer look at the Super and put it through its paces.

Admittedly, calling your product "Super" demonstrates a great deal of self-confidence, and so our expectations for the Bell Super were high from the start.

Visually, the helmet's deep, all-around design clearly indicates that the Super offers a high level of protection. It extends significantly downwards at the back of the head compared to other models. Despite the seemingly generous use of materials, the helmet weighs a reasonable 370 grams, which shouldn't be too bothersome during use.

Thanks to its rally stripe and large visor, the Bell Super has a very sporty look. To ensure it performs well in use, it features a sophisticated ventilation system. 25 vents and four channels that direct air from the forehead over the head are designed to keep you cool even on warm summer days. But what truly sets the Super apart from its competitors are features like the GoPro mount and the Goggle Guide , which prevents the goggles from slipping.

However, this requires removing the visor and screwing on the included mount. Therefore, the Google Guide is of only minor interest to cyclists, but it significantly expands the helmet's range of use, especially for winter sports.

Our test model in size M allows an adjustment range of 55-59 centimetres. The fixation system of the helmet can be adjusted in three heights.

In use, the Super impresses with its good fit. It sits very well around the head and provides a high level of security. Only the somewhat coarsely notched adjustment dial detracts from the overall comfort.

The ventilation works perfectly thanks to the many openings. Even with longer XC units you only sweat a little. The upholstery also absorbs moisture well, so that no sweat can run into your eyes.

The GoPro mount can be attached to the top of the helmet with two Velcro fasteners on the inside of the helmet. This is tight and is a nice feature. However, one of the Velcro fasteners broke on the third use.

Conclusion

The Bell Super Enduro helmet impresses with its simple design and the high level of safety it provides. The deep-fitting helmet offers a good fit and has some clever features, such as the GoPro mount and goggle guide . It lives up to its name to a degree. In terms of safety, it's unrivaled by any of its competitors, but one wishes for a bit more attention to detail.
