Test: The Load is a real commercial vehicle, but it's definitely family-friendly: For example, a double child seat can be attached to the loading area; if you don't choose the cargo bike in the S version with a 45 km/h drive, you could even tow a child trailer. First and foremost, however, the space miracle from Darmstadt is aimed at transporting loads, and to ensure that this works as well as possible, the construction differs significantly from that of a normal bicycle.
The wheelbase, which is extremely long at 1,80 metres, naturally has an effect on the handling of the handlebars; cornering takes some getting used to, especially since the driver pushes half the wheel in front of him. At the same time, the small 20-inch front wheel ensures quite agile steering - this takes practice, but is a lot of fun. A linkage connects the "steering column" to the fork, above which there is an approximately 60 x 40 cm platform with a stable frame. The permissible total weight of 200 kilos means that after deducting the vehicle weight (around 33 kilos) and the driver, 80 to 100 kilos can be loaded. And in view of the spacious transport area, these can be large objects, even a small washing machine can be transported. Apart from that, Riese and Müller offer various bodies, also made to measure - the bike could also be transformed into a coffee scooter.
An interesting feature is the full suspension typical of Riese and Müller, which ensures that the heavily loaded front wheel does not fall into every pothole and can roll over curbs with relative ease. The back of the driver who is sitting upright is also protected. The Cargo is available as a normal and as a fast e-bike, with a choice of ten-speed derailleur gears or the stepless NuVinci hub - the latter perhaps being the better option for heavy-duty traffic. The bike is only available in one frame size, but there are many adjustment options - the height-adjustable handlebar mast can be swiveled forward to change the distance between the saddle and the handlebars.

(1) Velomotion tests the range of all e-bikes under maximum conditions. The test lap is 9,8 km long and with 171 meters of altitude difference it is very tough and sometimes very steep. The system weight of bike and rider should be 120 kg (± 5 kg). Lighter drivers receive additional weights. Driving is at maximum support level and also very quickly. This is the only way to determine honest and comparable values. You can expect to get at least twice the range with a medium assist level and on less undulating terrain.
Incidentally, with most systems you have a small range reserve, similar to that of a car. Even if the battery shows 0 km, there is still one to five kilometers left with a moderate driving style.
