Cycling: The Czech Petr Vakoc (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) won the second stage of the Tour of Poland with a dazzling ride and thus also took the lead in the overall standings.
The field had to cover 234 kilometers from Torun to Warsaw today – in better weather conditions than yesterday. After just a few kilometers, Vakoc, Przemyslaw Kasperkiewicz (Poland) and Bartlomiej Matysiak (CCC Polsat) broke away from a trio that was able to develop a maximum lead of 4:25 minutes.
With almost 80 kilometers to go, the sprinter teams then took over the pace in the field, but the lead didn't really want to decrease. With almost forty kilometers to go, Vakoc finally broke away from his companions and bravely defended a lead of more than two minutes. Only on the final kilometers did the field come closer – up to 21 seconds. Second Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) was unable to snatch victory from the 22-year-old Czech. Boris Valee (Lotto Belisol) was third on the day.
In the overall standings, Petr Vakoc now leads ahead of yesterday's stage winner Yauheni Hutarovich (Ag2R LaMondiale).
