Cycling: Robin Carpenter secured his first victory on stage two of the USA Pro Challenge from Aspen to Crested Butte. Alex Howes takes over the yellow jersey thanks to his second place.
Stage two of the USA Pro Challenge took the peloton from Aspen to Crested Butte. Robin Carpenter (Hincapie Sportswear Development) drove a smart race. The young American, whose team is competing in the USA Pro Challenge for the first time, was able to break away from the leading group and rode a brilliant solo.
However, after mastering the final climb of the Kebler Pass, the race had to be halted due to heavy showers. Carpenter was stopped by the officials and his lead of almost 45 seconds was neutralized for the time being. After a short break, the race resumed.
With just nine kilometers to go, Carpenter was awarded his 45 second advantage, allowing him to hold his pursuers across the finish line.
“It's unbelievable and without question the best thing that could have happened to our team. I still can't quite believe that I won", said the 22-year-old.
Alex Howe (Team Garmin Sharp) picked up the chase after the race resumed. Together with Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing Team) he drove within six seconds of Carpenter and took over the yellow jersey.
