cycling: Vuelta a Espana #9: Colombian Doubles

August 31, 2014 by Veit Hammer

Cycling: The second mountain finish of the Vuelta a Espana in Aramón Valdelinares saw a change in the lead in the standings as well as an offensive final where winner Anacona (Lampre-Merida) showed the best legs. He won ahead of Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) and Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Merida).

Anacona was part of a 31-man breakaway that formed after 25 of the 181 kilometers to be covered. At the foot of the final climb, the Colombian initially attacked with Bob Jungels (Trek) and Javi Moreno (Movistar), but as the lead over the Sky-led field began to drop below four minutes, he continued his attack solo.

Up to the two-kilometer mark, Anacona was even virtually in the red leader's jersey. Then Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) took over. Chris Froome (Sky), whose team-mates had done most of the tracking work up to that point, fell behind, as did leader Alejandro Valverde (Movistar).

Only Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) were able to follow Contador and thus make up places in the overall standings.

While winner Anacona celebrated his first professional victory at the finish, his compatriot Quintana took over the red jersey.

In the standings, Giro winner Quintana is now 3 seconds ahead of Contador and eight seconds ahead of Valverde. Anacona moved up to fourth place with his day win.
