Triathlon: The Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Mont Tremblant ended with a surprising victory for the Spaniard Javier Gómez. In the end, the World Series winner over the Olympic distance just kept the lead and relegated Jan Frodeno and the Brit Tim Don to the ranks.
Even at the start in Lake Tremblant, the favorites set a high pace. Gómez led an illustrious group to the first change, in which Frodeno was also represented. On the bike, both were able to assert themselves at the front, although they initially had to let two riders from their group go. However, Josh Amberger and Ben Collins posed no threat until the second substitution.
On the running track, Gómez and Frodeno finally got serious. However, the Olympic champion from Beijing did not manage to keep the Spaniard on a short leash. In the end, 40 seconds were enough for him to be able to celebrate his first world championship title on the Ironman 70.3 distance. Tim Don secured third place behind Frodeno. Nils Frommhold underlined the good performance of the German athletes in 5th place. Defending champion Sebastian Kienle never really made it into the race and ended up 18th.
In the women's category, Daniela Ryf from Switzerland won clearly ahead of Jodie Swallow from Britain and Heather Wurtele from Canada.
