Cycling: The fights for the coveted rainbow stripes will start tomorrow. In Ponferrada in the province of Castille and Léon, the UCI World Championship will start at 10:00 am.
A total of 12 competitions are looking for new title holders. The UCI teams start with the team time trial. On September 28, in the last race of the week, the successor to Rui Costa will be sought.
Favorites
The favorite roles in the elite races are clearly distributed. In the women's team time trials, you should pay particular attention to the Specialized-lululemon team, which won the competition in the past two years. They should get strong competition from Marianne Vos' team Rabo-Liv.
For the men, all eyes will be on Team Omega Pharma-QuickStep led by Tony Martin. However, the Belgian team shouldn't be too sure of themselves. Orica-GreenEdge certainly wants a say in the matter of victory.
In the individual time trial competitions, the defending champions Ellen van Dijk and Tony Martin are the big favourites. The Eschborn native is trying to win his fourth title in a row. In the juniors, however, last year's winner Igor Decraene, who tragically passed away recently, will be remembered.
The main races take place next weekend. Marianne Vos will do everything to defend her title from last year. Rui Costa will emulate her for the men. However, the Spaniards around Alejandro Valverde, who has already shown on the course at the Spanish championships that it suits him, should want to have a say. The profile of the course is tailored to the skills of a Peter Sagan. Should he get fit, John Degenkolb certainly has a chance of winning a medal. The quartet will also be joined by Simon Gerrans, Greg van Avermaet, Vincenzo Nibali and Joaquim Rodriguez.
