Cycling: Madrilenian Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) has won the Vuelta a Espana just a few weeks after breaking his tibia – for the third time in his career. Overall, it was the sixth win in a Grand Tour.
The Spaniard's joy at the finish in Santiago de Compostela was correspondingly great. The final nine-kilometer time trial started anything but well for Contador. While still on the starting ramp, he slipped away with his bike and then approached the time trial more relaxed. Second overall Chris Froome (Sky), who ended up trailing Contador by 1:10 minutes, also stopped taking any risks. The podium was completed by Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), who ended up 1:40 behind.
Valverde's teammate Adriano Malori secured the stage victory in Santiago de Compostela. In the absence of Tony Martin and Fabian Cancellara, the Italian improved the early best time of Jesse Sergent (Trek) by eight seconds with 11:12 minutes. Rohan Dennis (BMC) was third on the day.
