General

General: Mavic Cosmic Carbon 40: My carbon clinchers for the season

Today I want to be a little more specific about our team wheel, the Mavic Cosmic Carbon 40. This is a full carbon rim with classic spokes and the well-known good Mavic hubs. The Cosmic Carbon 40 have a 40 millimeter high profile and are available as tubular as well as clincher. With carbon clinchers in particular, the increased force exerted by the outwardly pressing wire tire causes particularly high material stress in the area of the rim flange, i.e. the extension of the rim into which the casing engages.

The combination of this stress and the simultaneous heat build-up on the brake flanks causes problems with many other makes. Mavic came up with something very special for this spot: An aluminum inlay strengthens the rim flange and improves the dissipation of the heat generated. For many end consumers, this is sometimes met with great irritation - "Why carbon when there is aluminum in it, etc..." you hear that often – but the practical test proves Mavic absolutely right.

In addition, they count Cosmic Carbon 40 one of the few wheels whose rim bed does not have to be drilled through, thanks to Mavic's special Fore technology, in order to be able to anchor the spoke nipples in the rim bed. This is made possible by a very complex structure that has to be created in the carbon rim. Due to the fine grooves, the small aluminum counterparts remain in position and the nipples can be securely anchored. All this makes the rim ring much more stable and ensures the outstandingly constant braking performance of the Cosmic Carbon 40.

I would almost say that the Cosmic Carbon 40 be able to stand up to full carbon rims in terms of braking performance without drilling through the rim bed. Unlike many other clinchers, the rim brakes very evenly without jerk! This increases confidence in the material immensely, you can brake harder and later than with other rims. The longevity is also significantly increased by the aluminum inlay. This results in large part from the improved Thermoregulation the rims.

While carbon conducts heat much less well than aluminum, carbon rims are generally prone to overheating. With the big disadvantage that the resin melts and forms bubbles if the heat is too high. A well-known problem for everyone who descends a little less quickly than I do and who also has to brake a few kilos more. Here the aluminum shows its advantages for the second time, because it dissipates the heat better within the rim and distributes it, so to speak, over more material.

The way food is TG max-Technology comes at the Cosmic Carbon 40 to use: This means nothing other than the principle just described of using the right material in the right place. Likewise with the Foretechnology, where the best technical solution is achieved through the optimal use of materials and thus all the properties of the impeller can be improved.

But not only technically Cosmic Carbon 40 very attractive in the clincher version. In addition to the existing variant with wheel bags, tires and carbon-coated hubs including titanium quick-releases for 1.990 euros, there is the Cosmic Carbon 40 now also as a cheaper version. As Cosmic Carbon 40 Elite you get the same technology here, but without wheel bags and with standard hubs and quick releases for 1.590 euros.

But as always, the best for last: For all Mavic carbon rims (Ultimate, CXR and Cosmic Carbon models, there is now the MP3 package from Mavic for just one euro on top! This means free replacement even in the event of a fall and external influences - i.e. a full casco no deductible My Pro Team riders and I have the Cosmic Carbon 40 rendered loyal and confident service throughout the season - at the toughest alpine marathons. Predicate: highly recommended!
