Cycling: Spaniard Alberto Contador received the "Velo d'Or" award for the best professional cyclist of the 2014 season, beating Vincenzo Nibali and Alejandro Valverde.
The French Velo Magazin has once again voted for the cyclist of the year, who is awarded the "Velo d'Or". International sports journalists voted the Vuelta winner Contador the winner with 66 points. Vicenzo Nibali (58 points) and Alejandro Valverde (38 points) came in second.
Although Contador is not at the top of the World Tour standings, he was very successful in the 2014 season. Stage wins at the Vuelta ao Algarve and Vuelta al Pais Vasco are recorded at the start of the season. He was able to win Tirreno-Adriatico and was second at the Volta a Catalunya. The Spaniard had to leave the Tour de France early after a fall and a fractured shin. But already at the Vuelta, his home race, he celebrated a comeback and was able to win the three-week race. Now he has been voted best cyclist for the fourth time.
