Andy Schleck started in 2009 as one of the big favorites in the oldest monument of the cycling calendar. He finally made the decisive attack on the Côte de la Roche aux Faucon.

In the yellow jersey, Andy Schleck attacked his rival Alberto Contador. Due to a defect, however, he had to stop the attack. Contador took his chance, but in the end had to cede the title to the Luxembourger because of doping.

In the end, Andy Schleck was second overall – he had lost the title to Cadel Evans in the time trial. However, the Luxembourger had his moment of glory on the 18th stage, which he won after a nearly 60-kilometer solo on the Col du Galibier.
