Clothing: Cratoni C-Hawk: The MTB helmet under test

26 October 2014 by Andrew Waldera

Test: Helmets for mountain bikers have to meet special requirements. They must have good ventilation even at low speeds, while ensuring maximum protection and also offering a high level of comfort. Not an easy task! With the C-Hawk, the Swabian helmet manufacturer Cratoni meets this challenge.

What is striking about the Cratoni C-Hawk are the 22 large ventilation openings and the deep cut of the helmet shell. In size M/L (56-59 cm), the C-Hawk weighs exactly 293 grams - only 3 grams more than the label on the helmet says. The helmet, which is manufactured using the inmold composite construction and with carbon reinforcements, of course fulfills DIN EN 1078. The applied reflectors increase safety in adverse visibility conditions. In addition to a helmet bag, the helmet comes with additional pads and a replaceable insect screen.

LFS with 3-stage height adjustment

Adjusting the helmet using the LFS (Light Fit System) is extremely easy. The adjustment wheel is easily accessible, but it should not be smaller. With the additional 3-level height adjustment, the C-Hawk can be optimally adjusted. The strap guide makes it easy to put on the helmet without much fumbling with the helmet straps. The closure, which can be operated with gloves, is also great. The grid allows for a comfortable closure, with the Quick Open System the helmet can be opened again with a pull.

To keep calm!

In practice, the Cratoni C-Hawk can confirm the first very good impression. The helmet sits wobble-free on the head even during rough actions. The fit is perfect and the comfort is amazing. The Coolmax upholstery is also very pleasant in this context. The ventilation of the head works really well. The large ventilation holes and the air ducts ensure good cooling in all driving situations. Even the low-cut rear area is sufficiently supplied with fresh air. The processing of the helmet also gives no reason for criticism. Even after many hard uses, the helmet shows no abnormalities.

Conclusion

The Cratoni C-Hawk leaves nothing to be desired. The helmet is very easy to adjust, offers a perfect fit and is extremely comfortable to wear. On top of that, there's the smart look!
