Cycling: It was only a few days ago that the world cycling association announced the positive EPO result of Valentin Iglinskiy from Kazakhstan. Now his older brother Maxim Iglinskiy has also been suspended.
Maxim Iglinskiy's greatest achievement is winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2012. That year he was part of Astana's Tour squad and helped Vincenzo Nibali on his way to the yellow jersey.
After his brother Valentin Iglinskiy already admitted to having doped with EPO, he was dismissed from Astana without notice. The same fate is likely to await Maxim Iglinskiy now. Because in a sample from August 1st - i.e. after the tour - the same substance was found in him. What's interesting is that his test has only just come to light, even though his sample was taken almost 14 days before his brother's.
There is no official statement from the UCI. Astana temporarily suspended Maxim Iglinskiy: "All drivers of the team are contractually obliged", according to team manager Alexandr Vinokurov, “The strict rules and regulations [the Movement for Credible Cycling (MPCC), of which Astana has been a member since 2013] to follow.”
Furthermore, the message from the team, which is currently waiting for the result of the B sample, says: "It is especially unacceptable for a Kazakh who represents the image of our team and our country." Winged words, considering Vinokurov's own past.
