Test: Gone are the days when Garmin only made good navigation devices. At least since the introduction of edgeseries, the company is one of the pioneers when it comes to bicycle computers.
Through the sponsorship of the Garmin-Sharp professional team, the brand became known to a broad public. But the products are not only suitable for professionals, but also for everyone. This applies in particular to the new Garmin Edge 1000, which we were allowed to take a closer look at.
The Edge 1000 manages to unite two worlds. From a purely visual point of view, the navigation system looks very classy and tidy with its 3-inch, high-resolution color touchscreen. It is operated using three buttons and the touchscreen.
Once switched on, you are guided intuitively through the various functions of the device. The brightness of the display lighting can be adjusted and is easy to read even in the sun.
Before the start you can choose between training and racing. The displayed parameters can be configured accordingly. You can choose whether you want to call up only 1 or even 10 parameters per display. However, reading up to ten parameters on a display while driving can be an adventure.
The Edge 1000 is equipped with ANT+, Bluetooth® and WLAN and is a real all-rounder. So you can connect the device with the cadence sensor, the speed sensor, the power meter, but also the smartphone.
By connecting to the smartphone, you can not only see who is calling or who you are receiving an email from, you can also evaluate the recorded data directly using Garmin Connect. Once connected to the mobile phone, you can let your coach navigate you. Another positive aspect is that in the event of an accident, the location can be traced. The more features you call up at the same time, the faster the battery drains. With the Bluetooth switched off, however, you can easily train for up to 15 hours.
In order to be able to navigate with the device, planning on the PC is not absolutely necessary. The preinstalled Garmin map Europe is based on Open Street Map data with routable streets, bike paths, elevation data, points of interest and an address search. Before starting the navigation, you can choose whether you are traveling with a racing bike, an MTB or on another bike. With the Round trip routingfunction you can then determine the desired duration of the journey. Then offers one of the Edge 1000 three different rounds with different height profiles. In practice, this worked surprisingly well, except for 200 meters of gravel in road bike mode. However, if this type of route planning is not suitable for you, you can easily transfer tracks from the Internet to the device.
Conclusion
The Garmin Edge 1000 is a real all-rounder and is a perfect companion for both professionals and ordinary cyclists. Only the price of 579 euros for the bundle is a small drop of bitterness and makes some dreams burst.
