cycling: Paris-Tours: Jelle Wallays surprises

12 October 2014 by the editorial office

Jelle Wallays

Cycling: The Belgian Jelle Wallays (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise) won the autumn classic Paris Tour and caused a surprise. In the final, he defeated his escape colleague Thomas Voeckler (Europcar). Jens Debusschere (Lotto Belisol) led the field to the finish twelve seconds behind.

The 237-kilometre race was decided early on. Wallays and Voeckler broke up along with Kevin Van Melsen (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Cesare Benedetti (NetApp–Endura), Julien Duval (Roubaix Lille Metropole), Pierre Gouault (BigMat – Auber 93) and Yoann Paillot (La Pomme Marseille). the first kilometers. They then extended their lead to more than seven minutes, before the teams Giant-Shimano and FDJ.fr around the favorites John Degenkolb and Arnaud Demare tried to work on the pace in the field. This had an effect.

When the lead of the leaders decreased noticeably, Voeckler went on the offensive. Only Wallays and Van Melsen were able to follow the Frenchman. In the field, Sep Vanmarcke followed the trio and lured Degenkolb out of the reserve. The attack saw Voeckler and Wallays break away from Van Melsen to salvage their narrow lead over the day's final climb, the Côte de l'Épan. Wallays then had the better legs in the sprint and prevailed against his well-known escape colleague. He was not happy about that and refused to go to the podium.

In the end, Degenkolb finished 43rd.
