Testing: SKS Airworx 10.0: Orange evergreen

20 October 2014 by Michael Faiss

SKS Airworx 10.0

Test: The Airworx 10.0 is one of the evergreens among the floor pumps in the SKS range. Solid workmanship, paired with decent pump performance and the manometer on the upper part of the pump still make the Airworx 10.0 a very good all-rounder.

The Airworx 10.0 comes in the typical SKS orange color and has a steel pump cylinder. The large handle, which is pulled back slightly and is rubberized on the top, is striking. The foot is also made of steel, knobs on the underside ensure a secure footing.

As with almost all SKS pumps, the tried-and-tested TwinValve pump head is also used with the SKS Airworx 10.0. A good choice, after all it is compatible with all types of valves, easy to use and absolutely reliable. The Airworx has exotic status because of the placement of the manometer: while most of the competitors integrate it in the base, the dial of the large orange SKS is at the top of the pump, close to the user's field of vision. That's why the small diameter of the manometer doesn't weigh that heavily. The handle is a big plus point: although it is relatively hard, it has a very good shape, which feels good in the hand even when you exert a lot of effort.

In practical use, the large handle is particularly appealing and the manometer attached at the top is a big plus. When it comes to feeling pumped, there is light and shadow. While the Airworx copes very well with large-volume tires and low pressures, the operating forces increase sharply from around 6 bar and until the maximum 10 bar is reached, you start to sweat quite a bit. What was also noticeable was the high volume of the pump - yes, right, volume. The pump smacks, squeaks and wheezes while pumping. It doesn't matter, but it might bother some people.

It is no coincidence that the Airworx 10.0 can be found in many workshops and households. In terms of ergonomics, the pump is really good thanks to the very good grip and the cleverly positioned pressure gauge. Unfortunately, the pump performance is not at a quite as high level. The Airworx gets some problems, especially at high pressures.
