components: Fulcrum Racing Speed XLR - Durable lightweight

19 November 2014 by the editorial office

Fulcrum Racing Speed XLR

Lightness is a top priority with the Fulcrum Racing Speed XLR. With only 1324g at a rim height of 50mm, the wheelset is one of the top 3 in our test in terms of weight components. In addition to the rim, the hub bodies are also made of carbon, which not only ensures low weight, but also high lateral rigidity of the wheel. In addition, CULT (Ceramic Ultimate Level Technology™) ensures that the wheels run smoothly. According to a Fulcrum test in which the wheel is accelerated to 500 rpm and then the drive is stopped, wheels equipped with CULT™ bearings continue to move for 45 minutes, ie 9 times longer than a wheel with standard bearings. We noticed the long running time, but when you hold the hub with your hands and turn it, the bearings seem to run very rough.

The roughness was not noticeable on the test site, but given the relatively slow speeds compared to the road, it is difficult to make any statements about good or bad running characteristics.

The Fulcrum Racing Speed XLR is an all-round successful, well thought-out wheelset for cross use. The bearings run a little rougher than usual, but a longer service life is promised. The weight is very low thanks to the carbon hub bodies.
