Test: Knee pads are essential when dealing with the subject of protectors. In recent years, these have made real quantum leaps in terms of design, weight and protection. New materials are being developed that can absorb and dissipate forces better and are also more resistant. IXS Sports Division, like many other companies, is working on the perfect pad. We had the IXS Carve knee pads in addition.
Knee pads usually differ very little at first glance. There are small features that make life on the bike a lot easier or less worry-free. But what must a schooner have or be able to do in order not to be thrown into the corner after the first trip? The most well-known source of interference with knee pads is the back and the pinching in the hollow of the knee when pedaling. This problem was already present ten years ago and even with some newer schooners it has not yet been completely eliminated. In addition, it must not slip, should be flexible and not too heavy and should of course offer decent protection if the worst comes to the worst.
The IXS carves was specially manufactured for gravity use and consists of a X Matter TM – Padding with high impact and energy absorption and injected open cells with low-speed cushioning function. The breathable one AeroMeshTM-Fabric is sweat-wicking and antibacterial. In order to prevent damage to the fabric, a tear-resistant and elastic Keflar coating was chosen for the outer skin.
In the hand, the protectors make a very good impression. The seams are neatly finished and the fabric looks very solid. The padding is adapted to the shape of the knee and the protector is preformed for the bent position of the knee. The integrated protective pad manages the balancing act between flexibility and rigidity extremely well, so that a high level of protection is provided.
The IXS convinces on the bike carves with a great fit. The preformed protector adapts very well to the knee and, thanks to a silicone band, only tends to slip very slightly. Velcro fasteners also ensure a good fit. The fact that the protector is a little longer than usual and thus protects the shin a little is another nice detail.
The only criticism of the IXS carves is the fabric in the hollow of the knee. No opening was sewn in here, which means that the fabric often pinches in the hollow of the knee when pedaling a lot.
Conclusion
The IXS carves is a frequently seen companion on the knee in the scene. This is not entirely unfair. In addition to a great fit, the protector offers good protection and not only on the knee due to its elongated shape. The shin is also partially covered. Although it is not the cheapest saver at 79,95 euros, it is worth every penny.
