Spectrum: The global aid organization World Bicycle Relief announced today that it is collaborating with the major Swiss bank UBS. As part of this cooperation, the "Davos Challenge: Walk for Education" will take place at the World Economic Forum in Davos from January 21 to 24 and 2.500 bicycles will be donated to Africa.
In the rural areas of Africa, the distance to educational institutions such as schools is one of the biggest obstacles in the way of education, especially for younger children. It is not uncommon for girls and boys to have to walk several kilometers to get to school and back home. This costs valuable time and is often dangerous. With the bike as a means of transport, the time required for these routes could be reduced fundamentally. In the past, the aid organization World Bicycle Relief has donated more than 220.000 bicycles to children in Africa to improve their educational opportunities.
At this year’s Economic Forum in Davos, 1.000 Volunteer pedometers are distributed. During the subsequent Walk for Education, UBS and UBS Optimus will donate a bicycle to World Bicycle Relief for each participant who completes the average distance of an African schoolchild to school. The total will be extrapolated to 2.500, meaning that, in an optimal scenario, 2.500 bicycles will go to Africa.
