Clothing: Mavic Sprint Bib Tight – the inconspicuous

February 14rd 2015 by Michael Faiss

Test: The French manufacturer Mavic has become an integral part of the cycling clothing market. Whether racing bike, mountain bike or touring cyclist, there is a corresponding product range for almost every requirement profile. With the Mavic Sprint Bib Tight, we have taken on long bib tights with a seat pad for cold temperatures.

At first glance, we were quite surprised by the Mavic Sprint Bib Tight - the material is significantly more elastic and thinner than many other pants in this category. However, when we put it on, we immediately sense that Mavic has opted for a roughened inside in the right, sensitive areas. This mainly affects the area around the thighs and the kidney area. Exactly where it tends to get cold on wintry rides. The back panel is also made of a mesh-like fabric, which will hopefully provide the necessary breathability.

The fit of the Mavic Sprint Bib Tight is really excellent. Zippers on the stomach and on the leg ends make it easier to put on, but do not rub uncomfortably even on longer journeys. The wide straps are very comfortable and overall the trousers are pleasingly unobtrusive. The proven Ergo 3D technology from Mavic is used for the seat pad: Three different padding densities make it particularly comfortable to ride without being uncomfortably thick. In fact, the upholstery is rather thin compared to the competition: it is never uncomfortable and still provides a significant increase in comfort on long journeys, but one thing is also clear: the focus here is clearly on sporting use and that Upholstery in no way replaces the necessary seat meat. Fans of thicker, softer cushions will probably not get their money's worth.

But how do the pants fare in terms of weather protection? Here you have to say right at the beginning: The Mavic Sprint Bib Tight is not one of the warmest pants in its class. Anyone looking for a companion for temperatures well below 0°C will probably not be happy. But the Mavic is perfect for cool autumn and spring days or warm winter days. The roughened inside on the thighs and in the kidney area is comfortable and the Teflon coating makes the material highly water-repellent. The Mavic, on the other hand, doesn't like wind that much - it's clearly noticeable through the material. On the other hand, the Sprint Bib Tight is only slightly inferior to its summer counterparts in terms of breathability and we never get uncomfortably sweaty and warm.

The Mavic Sprint Bib Tights are the right pants for those who are looking for very good long bib tights that also stand up to cool temperatures, but don't wear like classic winter pants. The fit and seat pad are very good - the Mavic only reaches its limits at well below 0°C.
