Construction and design of the pedal
The contact surface for the NC-17 Gladiator XII S-Pro pedal is a CNC-machined aluminum frame with large cut-outs. It is striking that the Cr-Mo axle does not cover the entire width of the pedal. The transverse webs distribute the acting forces and thus contribute to the stability. To reduce weight, both the front of the pedal and the crossbars have cutouts. 8 pins on each side should ensure the necessary grip on the pedal. Seven pins are steel pins that can be screwed through from below, only one pin is designed as a grub screw. The manufacturer uses sealed precision bearings to mount the pedal.
Before the test / visual impression
The first impression of the NC-17 Gladiator XII S-Pro pedal: Very fine workmanship! The approximately 17 mm high anodized pedal body looks extremely high quality and has no flaws. With the recesses on the front side and the cross braces, NC-17 has come up with a real eye-catcher: If you look closely, you can see the pedal designation "XII". Very cool! We also really like the solution with the screw-through steel pins. A really sensible and well thought-out solution! A bag with eight spare pins is included. The weight of the couple is specified by the manufacturer as 389 grams, and we can actually confirm this to the gram. The pedal has a slight resistance when turning to prevent unwanted further turning during tricks.
field test
The NC-17 Gladiator XII S-Pro pedal was already able to score its first plus points before the ride test, but what was the reality on the trail like? To put it bluntly: Great! The flat pedal convinced with powerful grip in all weather conditions. The tread is large enough and the contact surfaces are reduced to the bare essentials. Thanks to the large cut-outs, self-cleaning works perfectly. The almost 5 mm high steel pins bite mercilessly into the sole of the shoe and give the rider absolute security on the trail in all riding situations and in all weather conditions. The light and intentional turning resistance of the pedal is not noticeable when driving.
After the test
The convincing performance continues after the test. The pedal is not only visually in extremely good condition, we can't find any damage to the bearings either. The pins are also tough, and ground contacts can hardly lift anything. The fixation of the pins is also good, we didn't notice any losses.
