Cycling: The Dutch professional cyclist Thomas Dekker has announced the end of his career on his website. Most recently, the 30-year-old failed to break the hour record in Mexico.
The statement said he had been contemplating the end of his career for weeks. His whole life would have been dominated by cycling and he would have experienced a lot in the process. He knows both the front and the back of the coin: would have won, lost, would have fallen and got up again. As a young professional cyclist, he only wanted one thing: to win races, at any cost. It was his strength, but also a trap. In recent years he has realized that there is more to life than winning bike races. He has learned from his mistakes and warns young drivers not to make the same mistakes. In his attack on the world hour record, he wanted to prove his speed again and find out for himself whether he would like to continue cycling. The answer would now be clear after a few weeks: He is ready for a new step in his life - without his bike!
