Cycling: In the shadow of the Giro d'Italia, the US road championships were held on Whit Monday in Chattanooga/Tennessee. In the pouring rain, Matthew Busche (Trek Factory Racing) was able to repeat his 2011 success.
Busche, who lives in Spain, started the race as a lone fighter and, after almost 180 kilometers, was 5 seconds ahead of second-placed Joe Dombrowski (Cannondale-Garmin). Third place went to Kiel Reijnen (UnitedHealthcare), who was already 19 seconds behind the leader. The event in the adverse conditions was characterized by failures, only 20 drivers finished the race. Among the absentees was the defending champion Eric Marcotte (SmartShop). In the women's sprint, Megan Guarnier (Boels Dolmans Cycling Team) won just ahead of Tayler Wiles (Velocio-Sram). Four seconds down on the two leaders, Amber Neben crossed the finish line in third place.
