Stage #2: Albenga – Genoa
- Date: Sunday 10 May
- Length: 173km
- TV: Eurosport, May 10.05th, 16:00 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: The winner of the first "real" stage of the Giro d'Italia 2015 is Elia Viviani (Team Sky). In a partly chaotic stage with numerous falls and a wild mass sprint, the Italian prevailed against Moreno Hofland (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Rostock's André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal).
Stage #3: Rapallo - Sestri Levante
- Date: Monday 11 May
- Length: 136km
- TV: Eurosport, May 11.05, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Another thrilling stage at this year's Giro d'Italia. 40km from the finish there was a moment of shock when ag2r pro Domenico Pozzovivo fell during the descent and lay motionless. The hospital gives the all-clear, but the Giro is over for him. In the end, Michael Matthews (Orica GreenEdge) wins, defending the maglia rosa with it.
Stage #4: Chiavari – La Spezia
- Date: Tuesday 12 May
- Length: 150km
- TV: Eurosport, May 12.05th, 13:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: What a success for young Davide Formolo from Cannondale-Garmin. At the foot of the final climb, the 22-year-old pulled away from the lead group and launched an impressive solo escape, finishing 22 seconds ahead of his pursuers. Classification favorite Rigoberto Uran lost feathers and lost more than 40 seconds to his competitors.
Stage #5: La Spezia – Abetone
- Date: Wednesday 13 May
- Length: 152km
- TV: Eurosport, May 13.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Young Slovenian Jan Polanc from Team Lampre-Merida was the first to cross the finish line after a hell of a solo ride in the mountain village of Abetone. Behind it was hard fighting - Contador, Aru and Porte heralded the battle for the maglia rosa. The Spaniard secured the coveted jersey but Aru is just two seconds behind and Porte is also within striking distance.
Stage #6: Montecatini Terme – Castiglione della Pescaia
- Date: Thursday 14 May
- Length: 181km
- TV: Eurosport, May 14.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Our editorial tip: A quiet stage - until the grand finale in Castiglione della Pescaia! André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) secures victory in the sprint ahead of Matteo Pelucchi (IAM) and Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida). During the sprint there was also a serious fall, again caused by a spectator, in which Daniele Colli was seriously injured.
Stage #7: Grosseto – Fiuggi
- Date: Friday 15 May
- Length: 263km
- TV: Eurosport, May 15.05th, 16:00 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: It was calm on the longest stage of this year's Giro. In the end it was Diego Ulissi from Team Lampre Merida who was able to prevail in the sprint against the competition from Movistar (José Lobato) and Orica GreenEdge (Simon Gerrans). André Greipel ran out of strength in the last few meters. Contador remains at the top of the overall ranking.
Stage #8: Fiuggi - Campitello Matese
- Date: Saturday 16 May
- Length 188km
- TV: Eurosport, May 16.05th, 16:00 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Spanish double victory in the first difficult mountain finish of this year's Giro. Benat Intxausti (Movistar) wins the battle of the breakaways and climbs the final kilometers solo to victory. 20 seconds later his compatriot Mikel Landa from Astana follows. The class favorites Contador, Aru, Porte and Uran cross the finish line in a common group after the top trio.
Stage #9: Benevento - San Giorgio del Sannio
- Date: Sunday 17 May
- Length: 212km
- TV: Eurosport, May 17.05th, 15:00 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Astana's Paolo Tiralongo has won what is perhaps the toughest stage of the Giro d'Italia to date. After a hard fight, he won as a soloist with a 21-second advantage over second-placed Steven Kruijswijk. Simon Geschke from Team Giant-Alpecin won the sprint of the first chasing group and crowned his strong performance with third place and the lead in the mountains classification.
Stage #10: Civitanova Marche – Forli
- Date: Tuesday 19 May
- Length: 195km
- TV: Eurosport, May 19.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Well, we were way off the mark with our editorial tip! None of the typical sprinters in the field decided the 10th stage for themselves, but a breakaway group around the day's winner Nicola Boem (Bardiani-CSF) made it to the finish without being caught. Richie Porte lost more than 40 seconds to Contador and Aru due to a technical defect - bitter for the Australian!
Stage #11: Forli – Imola
- Date: Wednesday 20 May
- Length: 147km
- TV: Eurosport, May 20.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Ilnur Zakarin from Team Katusha has won the 11th stage of this year's Giro d'Italia. After a rainy stage without any major highlights, he was the first to cross the finish line on the Formula 1 track in Imola. Contador, Aru, Uran and Porte finished at the same time as the peloton.
Stage #12: Imola – Vicenza
- Date: Thursday 21 May
- Length: 190km
- TV: Eurosport, May 21.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Philippe Gilbert (BMC) secured his first win of the season today in the cycling cult town of Vicenza. In an inimitable manner, the Belgian classic specialist outclassed the competition on the demanding final climb to the finish. Simon Geschke (Giant-Alpecin) comes in strong fourth and Fabio Aru (Astana) loses time on Contador.
Stage #13: Montecchio Maggiore – Jesolo
- Date: Friday 22 May
- Length: 153km
- TV: Eurosport, May 22.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: As expected, most of today's Giro stage to Jesolo wasn't particularly exciting - but a little more than 3km before the finish it happened: On the again extremely wet roads there was a mass crash. Contador was also involved in this, losing the maglia rosa to Fabio Aru. Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) wins in the sprint, Greipel misses out on the top 10.
Stage #14: Treviso – Valdobbiadene
- Date: Saturday 23 May
- Length: 59,2 km (individual time trial)
- TV: Eurosport, May 23.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: The almost 60km long time trial of this year's Giro d'Italia was viewed by many in advance as a chance for Alberto Contador's competition - Uran and Porte in particular have shown themselves to be stronger here than the Spaniard in the past. But everything turned out differently: With an unbelievably strong performance, Contador clearly distanced himself from the competition and ended up third on the day. Sky's Wassil Kiryjenka wins ahead of Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana).
Stage #15: Marostica – Madonna di Campiglio
- Date: Sunday 24 May
- Length: 165km
- TV: Eurosport, May 24.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Today's stage before the last rest day of this year's Giro was tough: An extremely difficult mountain stage in the middle of the Dolomites with a mountain finish in Madonna di Campiglio awaited the peloton. In the end, Astana pro Mikel Landa wins - Contador is third and gets more seconds on fourth Aru. After Porte, Uran is probably the next overall favorite to say goodbye today.
Stage #16: Pinzolo - Aprica
- Date: Tuesday 26 May
- Length: 175km
- TV: Eurosport, May 26.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Mikel Landa is the new second in the overall classification of the Giro d'Italia. The Spaniard clinched his second consecutive stage win in Aprica today - he launched a solo escape with 4km to go and ended up 38 seconds ahead of pursuers Steven Kruisjwijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo). Fabio Aru has had big problems again - so is there a changing of the guard at Astana?
Stage #17: Tirano – Lugano
- Date: Wednesday 27 May
- Length: 136km
- TV: Eurosport, May 26.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- >Race report and results
Summary: Sacha Modolo won his second stage of this year's Giro d'Italia in Lugano. The 27-year-old Italian relegated Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek) and Luka Mezgec (Giant-Alpecin) to second place in the mass sprint. For Modolo's Team Lampre-Merida it is the fourth day's victory at the Giro. Alberto Contador, Fabio Aru and Mikel Landa finished with the peloton.
Stage #18: Melide - Verbania
- Date: Thursday 28 May
- Length: 172km
- TV: Eurosport, May 28.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Philippe Gilbert clinched his second day win at this year's Giro in Verbania. As with his victory a few days earlier, he gave the competition no chance at all - now he even drove to victory as a soloist. Alberto Contador gains time on Aru and Landa, but the manner in which it was done is likely to cause controversy as he took advantage of a fall in the field that stopped the competition to attack.
Stage #19: Gravellona Toce – Cervinia
- Date: Friday 29 May
- Length: 236km
- TV: Eurosport, May 29.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: After an exciting and difficult 236km, Fabio Aru (Astana) secured his first day's victory at this year's Giro. The 24-year-old showed a tremendous performance on the final climb to the finish in Cervinia. The win moves Aru up to second overall but is still over four minutes behind Contador.
Stage #20: Saint-Vincent - Sestriere
- Date: Saturday 30 May
- Length: 196km
- TV: Eurosport, May 30.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: Fabio Aru has finally found his way back - but probably too late in the fight for the overall ranking. The young Italian won the second difficult stage in a row in Sestriere and continued to gain time on Contador. Still, the Tinkoff-Saxo Spaniard heads into the final stage to Milan with an extremely reassuring cushion of time.
Stage #21: Torino – Milano
- Date: Sunday 31 May
- Length: 185km
- TV: Eurosport, May 31.05th, 14:30 p.m. – 17:30 p.m
- Race report and results
Summary: In what turned out to be a very exciting final stage to Milan, Iljo Keisse from Etixx-QuickStep can celebrate what is probably his greatest career success to date. The Belgian got the better of Luke Durbridge (Orica-GreenEdge) after the two escaped to finish ahead of the field. As expected, Contador is the overall winner, Giacommo Nizzolo (Trek) is enthroned at the top of the points classification and Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) wins the mountains classification.

Giro d'Italia - The favourites
The course of the race, the weather, crashes - a lot can go wrong for drivers with ambitions to win. But at the end of the Giro d'Italia no random winner is chosen, but a complete driver. The chances for one of our six favorites are not bad? Velomotion presents the hottest contenders for victory in Italy.
Alberto counter
Contador is the declared top favourite. The Spaniard from Tinkoff-Saxo is the most successful tour rider in recent years: six victories in three-week national tours since 2007, plus two more that were disallowed for doping. Contador knows exactly how to divide his forces, drives tactically clever and yet passionately. He can win without being in top form: After his injury at the 2014 Tour de France, he came to the Vuelta without any specific preparation and won ahead of Chris Froome and Alejandro Valverde. On the other hand, he prepared meticulously for the 2015 Giro, inspected the course of the time trial and proudly tweeted pictures of his SRM data. He showed good early form at the Tour of Andalusia in February, finishing fourth in Catalonia. After a one-month break from racing, he is coming to Liguria fresh for the Giro start and knows a strong team around the experienced Ivan Basso behind him. A lot speaks for Contador in the pink jersey. Whether he can achieve his desired double with victories in the Giro and Tour in the same year is another matter.
Rigoberto Urán
The Colombian loves the Giro and has finished second for the past two years. The course suits him with the team time trial and especially the long individual time trial in Veneto. In the fight against the clock, he has to gain important time over his competitors. A performance like that of 2014, when he won the Barolo time trial, could provide a cushion for the mountains. Here it will be difficult for him to keep up with specialists like Contador or Aru until the end. He was a strong third at Tirreno-Adriatico, fifth in Catalonia and fifth at the Tour de Romandie. His team could be a weak point, last year he was sometimes on his own in the crucial mountain stages. Uran will definitely have a strong Giro. But is it enough for the highest podium in Milan?
Richie porte
After loyally helping Chris Froome at the Tour de France, the Australian will be let off the leash by his Team Sky this year. Porte is set to win the Giro as captain. Along the way he has put in impressive performances, winning Paris-Nice in March, the Tour of Catalonia in March and the Giro del Trentino in April. Judging by the results of the season, Porte is a strong contender for the win. In addition, he has one of the strongest teams behind him, and the unusually long time trial plays into his hands. However, a three-week tour of the caliber of the Giro d'Italia is a different matter than the shorter stage races in Portes Palmarès. Since finishing seventh overall at the Giro in 2010, he has not had a top ten finish in a Grand Tour. Again and again he allowed himself a black day or was slowed down by illness. If he can maintain a consistently high level over three weeks, he could become the first Australian to finish in the Giro.
Fabio Arau
The star of the Italian from Team Astana rose with a stage win and third place overall at last year's Giro d'Italia. Aru confirmed his talent as a tour driver in autumn 2014 with two stage wins and fifth place in the Tour of Spain. In doing so, he raised great expectations. As an unrestricted captain for the Giro overall standings, he is under greater pressure than a year ago. However, his preparation was bumpy. His Astana team are constantly at the center of doping discussions and Aru himself has had to deal with allegations from Greg Henderson. And there is also a question mark behind its shape. He finished sixth in the Tour of Catalonia, but then missed the Giro del Trentino because he said he suffered from stomach cramps. For him, the long time trial will primarily be about damage limitation. With that in mind, it would be a particularly strong showing if he were back on the podium in Milan.
Dominic Pozzo alive
The little Italian from the French AG2R team has repeatedly shown himself to be in great form at the Giro d'Italia in recent years. Last year he finished fifth in the final rankings. He has two victories to his credit this year: at the Tour of Catalonia he drove away in a stage of the group around Contador, Urán and Porte, at the Giro del Trentino he won the mountain finish in Fierozzo. He was also well ahead in the general classifications of Tirreno-Adriatico, Catalonia and Trentino. He was also a strong eighth at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. So he's ready for the Giro. The performance of his team, on the other hand, is difficult to assess and the time trial will give the lightweight climber a hard time. Still, if not this year, when could Pozzovivo make it onto the podium?
Jurgen van den Broeck
The Belgian from Team Lotto-Soudal has long been considered his country's hope for the Tour. He has already proven his great talent several times: as seventh in the 2008 Giro d'Italia, fourth in the 2010 and 2012 Tour of France and eighth in the 2011 Vuelta. But van den Broeck was just as often slowed down by falls or injuries, or was able to do not meet expectations for other reasons. His results this year are solid without standing out. At Tirreno-Adriatico he was eleventh in the final rankings, in Andalusia, Catalonia and most recently Romandy he landed in no-man's-land in positions between 14 and 23. That does not meet his own expectations. But the knot can also burst again, and why not at the Giro 2015? By the way: Van den Broeck is starting with the unusual start number 100, since the 108 has not been awarded at the Giro d'Italia since Wouter Weylandt's fatal crash in 2011.
