Testing: PRO CNC Minipump Tele - Small, beautiful, powerful

25 May 2015 by Michael Faiss

Test: With the PRO CNC Minipump Tele, the Dutch company PRO Bikegear is putting an extremely small representative of the hand pump group into the race. What does the little black and turquoise pump do in practice? Quite a lot - with one major weakness.

First impression of the PRO CNC Minipump Tele: It's small. With a length of just 13cm, it is smaller than some CO² pumps and fits in almost every jersey pocket. The quite high weight of almost 90g is surprising - but there is a good reason for that: The pump is made exclusively of aluminum, we don't find any plastic, neither inside nor outside. Since the processing is generally at an extremely high level, the CNC Minipump Tele makes a really high-quality and durable impression.

Inside is a two-stage telescopic piston made of turquoise anodized aluminum. When pulling apart, a short, unusual resistance has to be overcome twice. The reason is the so-called magnet lock system, which is used in various PRO pumps. This ensures that the pump does not push itself apart when pushed together - so it always remains nice and compact.

The pump head, which is completely in line with the design of the pump, accommodates Presta and Auto valves. A rarity with the small micropumps - these are usually only suitable for Schrader valves. The pump is fixed with an elegantly integrated clamping mechanism. This is pleasantly smooth-running, so that the pump can also be clamped with one hand without any problems. It's also tight - very nice!

The pump itself takes some getting used to at first - on the one hand because of the really very compact dimensions of the pump, on the other hand because of the magnetic lock system mentioned. It's not uncomfortable, and it doesn't require increased force, but above all it creates an increased background noise, as the pump makes a loud clicking sound with each squeeze. In terms of performance, the PRO CNC Minipump Tele shows itself from two sides: it has no problems with the narrow 23mm tires and it can still be pumped at 6 bar without excessive effort. However, when we tackle the wide, voluminous 28mm tire, the little black pump starts to sweat: we need more than 400 strokes until we have the targeted 4,5 bar in the tire. It takes a lot of patience and perseverance if the worst comes to the worst!

The very compact mini pump from PRO is very well made and does its job very reliably with little volume. But even 28mm tires require a lot of fat in the arms and a lot of patience.
