cycling: Sinkeldam wins Garmin Velothon in Berlin

31 May 2015 by Michael Faiss

Cycling: The Dutchman Ramon Sinkeldam from Team Giant-Alpecin won the 5th Garmin Veloton. In the sprint, the 26-year-old relegated the in-form Irishman Sam Bennett (Bora-Argon 18) and his own teammate Zico Waeytens to places. The best German is Gerald Ciolek (MTN-Qhubeka) in 6th place.

The victory of the young Dutchman from the ranks of Giant-Alpecin can definitely be described as a surprise. Many had expected a victory for the strong Sam Bennett, who recently underlined his strong form at the Bayern Rundfahrt. The Irishman seemed to have made a gamble in the final: He hesitated for an unexpectedly long time and Sinkeldam used this short moment of indecision 200m before the finish line and started the sprint. Bennett reacted immediately and got dangerously close to the Dutchman, but in the end he was a few millimeters short of victory. Sinkeldam was of course delighted with the win: “I am very happy with the win. I'm in good shape and had some good races in Yorkshire, Bavaria and the World Ports Classic, even if things didn't always go perfectly - it's all the better that it finally worked out today." said the 26-year-old about his first win of the season.

The race itself was rather calm. For most of the 175km around the capital, a small breakaway group of four rode in the lead, but was caught a little more than 4km from the finish line. Then came the hour of the sprint trains - Giant-Alpecin, Bora-Argon 20 and the ProContinental Team Topsport Vlaanderen did the best work here - in the end there was a happy ending for Sinkeldam.
