Cycling: Johannes Fischbach and Sandra Rübesam are the new German Downhill Champion 2015. Last weekend they won the coveted championship jerseys in Todtanu.
This year's German Downhill Championship was eagerly awaited. Yesterday, Sunday, the time had finally come and the finals started in the Todtnau Bike Park. After a surprising qualification on Saturday, which Johannes Fischbach was able to secure ahead of a strong Erik Irmisch, everyone was now looking forward to the nearly three-kilometer route on the Hasenhorn.
From Sunday afternoon the time had finally come. The riders climbed into the lift one last time to prepare for the big showdown at the start. The Pro Masters class was the first licensed category to take to the well-worn track. Benjamin Herold demonstrated the fast conditions that the meanwhile absolutely dry track allowed. With a time of 3:47.058 minutes, he drove an unbelievable 8 seconds faster than second-placed Martin Schneider.
The top favorite Franziska Meyer was absent from the women's event due to an injury, which meant that the cards were reshuffled and it was difficult to predict who would win the title. Sandra Rübesam caused the big surprise. While many had Harriet Rücknagel on the list, she had already won the title several times, Rübesam set the fastest time with 4:24.630s. She is followed by Maria Franke and Katrin Karkhoff.
Johannes Fischbach was already able to win the championship title in fourcross this year and as DH champion from the previous year he was undoubtedly the one to beat in the men's category. The Ghost team rider already won the qualification on Saturday and was able to repeat his placement in the finals. With a lead of 1.6s he got the championship jersey in Todtanu. Jasper Jauch and Benny Strasser completed the podium.
