Product news: SKS Rennkompressor is 50 years old

25 January 2016 by the editorial office

SKS racing compressor

Market: The SKS Rennkompressor is something like the VW Beetle of floor pumps: simple, functional, robust. Cyclists have been pumping up their tires with it for five decades. There is no end in sight to the success story.

In the 1960s, Walter Scheffer developed a floor pump for the company "Scheffer Klute Sundern" that was supposed to withstand the highest demands in professional cycling. The result was a product that matured in just a few evolutionary steps and has since served generations of cyclists faithfully. If the characteristic hissing sounds before a race or an RTF, before a bike ride in a garage or in the hobby room, you can be almost certain that an SKS racing compressor was used.

Outstanding products can be recognized by the fact that they have undergone little change. The design of the Rennkompressor has remained virtually unchanged since it was launched in 1966: a 52,5 centimeter long and three centimeter thick steel tube, a wooden handle, a cast iron base with a pressure gauge and two metal feet that can be folded up deliver a pressure of up to 16 bar. In today's fast-paced world, five decades is an incredible amount of time for a product. But the success proves the traditional company from the Sauerland right. SKS has sold millions of racing compressors and there seems to be no end in sight: SKS is celebrating the centenary of the racing compressor with an anniversary edition. It is very likely that this will also supply countless wheels with sufficient air for many years to come. Because the Rennkompressor is almost indestructible: Almost all parts are interchangeable, functionality and robustness are in the foreground.

The author of this text has been riding a racing bike since 1997. During this time he has worn out numerous frames, many add-on parts and countless wheel sets or, after a certain period of time, exchanged them for new parts. Undeterred, the SKS Rennkompressor from the 1998 model year watches over the comings and goings like a rock in the surf. Defects: none. Wear: every now and then a rubber valve. unpretentious. Functional. Timeless. Exactly how one imagines an ingenious product.
