General: “I owe that to the three of them” – Joachim Eilers 'shares' World Cup gold with the team

March 4, 2016 by the editorial office

Bahn-News: The enthusiasm among the German track and cycling fans yesterday was huge when Joachim Eilers finally won the World Championship gold after the Chemnitz native had so narrowly missed out on the title several times in the past. Despite all the joy, the 25-year-old didn't take off and in the evening emphasized the contribution of the support and coaching team to his success.

eilers4You just have to love this boy. Yesterday in the Olympic Velodrome in London, Joachim Eilers was delighted and cheered in a wonderfully authentic way about his first World Championship title in the 1.000m time trial, after only winning silver twice in previous years. In the first interview immediately after the great triumph, however, Eilers thanks the people behind his personal success, who are not as much in the limelight as he is, and emphasizes their share in the success: "I owe the fact that I drive faster with the same performance." – the 'three', meaning Ronny Hartnick from the FES, BDR head mechanic Sven Grundmann and national coach Sven Meyer.

In the past few weeks and months, a lot has been fine-tuned and tested to get a few thousandths of a second more out of Jo's times. For example, in the decisive run he relied on a handlebar attachment that was actually intended for the foursome, "The extensions are better there," Eilers explains the decision. In general, a lot of work was done on the seating position, as Hartnick explains "We tinkered around a lot to be able to adjust his seating position better."

So a lot of effort was put into it, yes "it was worth it" Eilers thinks so too – of course, after all he finally has the well-deserved gold medal in the time trial in his hands. The redhead doesn't let the fact that this discipline is no longer Olympic anymore: “World champion title is world champion title. Nobody can take that away from me anymore.” He is right! Congratulations again from us!
