It was a brutal finale in the Individual Pursuit for Domenic Weinstein last night at the Olympic Velodrome in London. The 21-year-old German from the Black Forest got off to a good start and in the first few laps gained a decent lead of around seven tenths over his Italian rival. So the two did lap after lap and even though the lead at the 3.000m mark had shrunk to a little more than half a second, it still looked like it was going to be a close affair.
But then came Filippo Ganna's big show. The 19-year-old suddenly upped the ante and set a blistering pace. The already visibly battered German had no chance to respond – Ganna ultimately gained an impressive three seconds on Weinstein in just 750 meters. It was a demonstration of power – in the end, more than two seconds separated Ganna (4:16,141) and Weinstein (4:18,275). Exhausted and disappointed, the German buried his face in his hands after the race. Weinstein hadn't yet grasped the magnitude of the silver medal, especially considering the German riders' lack of success in this discipline in recent years: "I'll need a few days to really understand that second place is a victory," he said, disappointed.
Roger Kluge also looks set to win a medal in the men's omnium. The IAM Cycling pro is currently in fourth place after three of six disciplines, tied on points with third-placed Thomas Boudat from France. Kluge's special discipline awaits on Sunday – the points race.
Surprisingly, the team from the USA also won the women's foursome ahead of their North American neighbors Canada. In the points race, the Brit Jonathan Dibben, who had already been favored beforehand, won the race with the same number of points ahead of the surprisingly strong Austrian Andreas Graf.
