Product news: Campagnolo Custom Build Award: dreams in steel, titanium and carbon

March 21, 2016 by Michael Faiss

Market / Spectrum: Among other things, the “Best Campagnolo Build Award” was presented at the Berlin Bicycle Show last weekend. A jury of experts - which also included the Velomotion editorial team headed by Marcus Degen - chose the three most beautiful individual pieces in the categories "Steel", "Carbon" and "Titanium". We have the three winners in detail.

Winner category carbon: Tsubasa Bicycles CROW

The small manufacturer Tsubasa Bicycles is originally from Lithuania, but has since relocated to London. With the CROW, a truly special piece of carbon fiber art could be admired at the minimalist stand. The frame, which weighs around 700g, does not have the outermost, smooth carbon layer - this gives you a completely raw finish that really impressed us.

Of course, all frames are made to measure and made entirely by hand - the matt black gem costs around €3.500.

The winning body came with a Super Record group and matt black attachments from 3T.

Titan Category Winner: Nevi Stelvio LA 1

nevi1

The traditional Italian forge Nevi is not only known to titanium fans. Of all the titanium bikes submitted, the jury liked the beautifully simple Stelvio LA 1 best – we think it was a really successful choice.

The velvety surface finish, the fantastically smooth welding seams and the many great details such as the ingenious feed were the decisive factors for the jury.

The Stelvio LA 1 also uses a titanium fork, while most other titanium bikes use carbon fiber forks. This is consistent, but the production-related welds are a bit annoying on the otherwise clean and elegant bike.

You are visibly proud of your homeland and the origin of the bike - we read the words "Made in Italy" no less than 6 times.

The almost organically curved seatstays also give the frame a truly unique look from behind. Around €3.200 is due for the frame set – depending on special requests and finish.

Steel category winner: Jaegher TS-38 Interceptor

The Campagnolo Framebuilders Award jury (from left): John Watson (theradavist.com), Marcus Degen (velomotion.de) and Dustin Nordhus (Cicli Berlinetta).

Now it's getting classic: The winner in the 'Steel' category comes from the Belgian manufacturer Jaegher. The TS-38 Interceptor is a visually stunning steel bike with classic shapes and an extremely low frame weight of around 1.500g for the material.

The big highlight of the Jaegher Interceptor, which was awarded at the Fahrradschau, is its brown/gold effect paint, which seems to change color depending on the viewing angle.

But also the many successful details such as cable routing and the frame protectors make the frame something special.

The construction of the Jaegher Interceptor is also impressive down to the smallest detail. Colour-coordinated add-on parts from Enve, handlebar tape that fits perfectly into the overall picture. The wheel magically attracts looks.

In the basic equipment, the Jaegher Interceptor costs €2.395 - depending on the choice of color and special requests, however, one or two euros will be added.
