Cycling: Shock, sadness, anger - after the tragic death of the Belgian professional cyclist Antoine Demoitié, emotions are mixed in the statements from the cycling world. But the tenor is clear - everyone involved agrees that it is finally time to think about a new safety concept for the drivers during the races. The motorcyclist has the backing of Wanty Groupe Gobert media director José Been.
José Been (Media Director Wanty Groupe Gobert): "It was a tragic accident. The rider of the bike has been following Belgian races for over 20 years. He is just as shocked and affected by what happened - as are all of us. That's a completely different thing than the accidents of Peter Sagan or Stig Broeckx. The driver tried to brake, lost control and fell on Antoine.”
Gianni Bugno (CPA President): "In these hours of grief over the death of Antoine, we do not wish to spark any discussion. But we are so frustrated. We have repeatedly emphasized that driver safety must come first, and at the last CCP meeting we asked for detailed plans for implementing a safety concept. I don't want to blame anyone, but at least give food for thought: everyone has a responsibility to ensure that the safety standards at every race are at the highest possible level.”
Alberto Contador (Tinkoff): "My deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Antoine Demoitié. It finally needs a control for motorcycles and vehicles!"
Marcel Kittel (Etixx – Quick Step): “It feels so unreal that Antoine Demoitié didn't survive his fall yesterday. My heartfelt condolences to family, friends and teammates.”
Brian Holm (Sports Director Etixx – Quick-Step): "And now?? (addressed to UCI)”
Bjorn Thurau (Wanty Groupe Gobert): "Dear Antoine! We teammates don't want to forget our time together and will always have fond memories of you!"
Bille Gaetan (Wanty Groupe Gobert): "By donating an organ, Antoine Demoitié saved three more lives - a hero to the end!"
Manuel Quinziato (BMC): "The grief leaves me speechless. It hurts so much to feel that better rules could have prevented the tragedy.”
Michael Rogers (Tinkoff): “Do such tragic circumstances really have to be in order for something to change? Please UCI and CPA – the drivers need your help. Would it help to limit the overtaking speed of the bikes to 15-20km/h more than the field?”
Dan Martin (Etixx – Quick Step): "What terrible news. The cycling family has lost a brother. Motorcycles are a necessity in our sport - both for safety and for the media. But there needs to be a change in governance and oversight. Overtaking the peloton on the descent, especially during decisive battles for position – that's just not safe!”
Ramon Sinkeldam (Giant Alpecin): “Eight weeks ago, five friends and I were hit head-on by an SUV. We complain about our poor form. And now I'm reading the news from Antoine..."
Jasper Stuyven (Trek Segafredo): “It's finally time for fewer bikes during the races. Or at least a limitation of the speed difference when overtaking. It's time to fight back!"
